Cups, grams, spoons, sticks of butter, fluid ounces — convert any amount the way the recipe wrote it into the way your kitchen measures it. Pick an ingredient and it converts volume to weight too.

Why “1 cup” isn’t one number

American recipes use the US cup (236.6 ml). Australia, New Zealand and Canada print 250 ml metric cups, and older British books use the imperial cup (284 ml). For a cup of flour the difference between US and imperial is about 20 g — enough to dry out a cake. Check where the recipe came from before you pour.

Measuring cups hide a surprising amount of history, and that’s why the same recipe can come out differently on two continents. The jug above shows all the cup sizes together, and ahaboo uses the same visual, interactive style to walk through topics you can adjust and follow at your own pace.

Weigh when you can, measure when you must

A digital scale removes almost every source of error in baking: how tightly flour was packed, whether sugar was heaped, whether your “cup” is American or Australian. Professional recipes are written in grams for that reason. When a recipe only gives cups, convert once with the ingredient-aware calculator above, write the grams in the margin, and bake by weight from then on.

For liquids, volume is fine: a cup of milk is 236.6 ml whether you weigh it or not, and a millilitre of water weighs one gram. Spoon measures of salt, baking powder and spices are small enough that volume works too — just level them off with a knife.

Questions cooks ask

How many ml are in a cup?

A US cup is 236.6 ml, usually rounded to 240 ml on nutrition labels. A metric cup (Australia, New Zealand, Canada) is 250 ml, and an old imperial cup is 284 ml.

How many grams is 1 cup?

It depends on the ingredient. A cup of water weighs about 237 g, all-purpose flour about 120 g, granulated sugar about 198 g and butter 227 g. Use the ingredient picker above to get the right weight.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?

No. A fluid ounce measures volume (29.6 ml); an ounce measures weight (28.35 g). They only line up for water and similar liquids.

How do I convert a recipe from metric to US measurements?

Convert liquids by volume (237 ml = 1 cup, 15 ml = 1 tbsp, 5 ml = 1 tsp) and solids by ingredient weight (120 g flour, 198 g sugar or 227 g butter = 1 cup). Oven temperatures convert with °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. The recipe scaler can convert a whole pasted ingredient list at once.

How do I change the number of servings in a recipe?

Divide the servings you want by the servings the recipe makes, then multiply every ingredient by that factor. Keep the oven temperature the same; adjust time only if the pan size changes.

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

There are 16 tablespoons in a US cup, and 3 teaspoons in each tablespoon, so 48 teaspoons in a cup.
