Why recipes round the numbers

350 °F is exactly 176.7 °C, but no British or European recipe says “177 °C”. Oven dials move in 10 °C or 25 °F steps and home ovens swing ±10 °C around the set point anyway, so 350 °F and 180 °C are treated as the same setting. The chart above uses those cook’s equivalents, not exact arithmetic.

Fan, convection and gas

A fan oven blows hot air over the food, stripping away the cool layer of air that surrounds it, so food cooks as if the oven were hotter. UK recipes often give both figures (e.g. “200 °C / 180 °C fan”). American “convection” settings work the same way — drop 25 °F. Gas marks come from British gas cookers; each mark is roughly 25 °F (14 °C) apart above mark 1.

An inexpensive oven thermometer is the single best way to check your oven. Many run 10–20 °C hot or cold.

Questions cooks ask

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

350 °F is 177 °C; recipes round it to 180 °C (160 °C in a fan oven, gas mark 4).

What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?

180 °C is 356 °F — use 350 °F on a US oven.

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. For Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32.

Do I lower the temperature for a fan oven?

Yes. Fan (convection) ovens cook faster, so reduce the temperature by about 20 °C (25 °F) or shorten the time.

What gas mark is 200 °C?

200 °C is gas mark 6 (about 400 °F).
